The Legend of the Garwhale

For those that know me they know I like nothing more than a good Treasure Hunt. With the appropriate group, they are relatively safe, a lot of fun, and can be quite lucrative.

One day, not too long ago, a group of us were out having a couple days of treasure hunting.

The deities had been good to us.

For the most part, things were exceedingly good. The weather was nice, and the fights were good. A number of the chests we had found had portals. All of us were a few hundred thousand Gil richer, and several had loot valued at much more than that.

And then it happened…

We had teleported to what we believed was the closest Aetherite to our next map location.

I’m not going to say where it was to help prevent spoilers. The people who have been to the area should be able to identify it from the photo.

We were flying along, sharing stories of our adventures, and generally BSing like adventurers do.

And then I blacked out…

Apparently, I froze completely. The whale had also stopped moving over an extremely deep chasm. Some might say bottomless…

Thinking I was just having one of my “episodes,” everyone sat around, continuing their antics and storytelling…

One of my healer friends cast a heal on me for good measure. Nothing happened…

… And then I disappeared …

That caused some alarm among the group.

These intrepid adventurers, all of which were Warriors of Light (WoL) had defeated gods, goddesses, and untold horrific monsters. Well, they began to get anxious.

One tried to dismount and found they couldn’t; another tried with the same result. Being WoL, I’m not going to say they panicked. But in people with less battle experience, that is how it might be characterized.

Then someone tried a teleport…

… they disappeared. Then the others followed.

A bit later, I came to… alone in the whale. I immediately panicked, wondering what happened to my friends. I rapidly checked my heads-up display, finding them gathered at the map location. I rapidly caught up to them…

I asked what had happened. They told me their side of the story. Of course, being WoL, none of them disclosed their “emotion” level. It wasn’t until they had more than a few drinks that they began to disclose the true story of their reaction.

We still go on Treasure Hunts every few moons. And, when there is a map in the same area as that night, I’m obliged to break out the Garwhale and carry those who are brave enough to board.

[Gar is unaware that I got disconnected, or DCed, during that flight. It just happened over the chasm and too far above the ground to dismount. The story has evolved into legend for those who join me in treasure hunts.
