Growing Thavnairian Onions
Growing Thavnairian Onions from seeds is fairly simple.
However, the seeds are quite expensive. Not as expensive as the onions themselves, but they are not cheap. Which you buy is likely to depend on your growing resources, available gil, and time requirement.
As always, I suggest you shop around, looking at prices in different worlds. Universalis.app is very helpful, but note that it scans market boards intermittently, so the prices may not reflect the price at any specific time. I always recommend checking your current world to see if someone has recently put the item up for sale at a low price.
Requirements:
- Indoor planter or garden plot
- You’ll need an apartment, FC private chamber, or house.
- Thavnairian Onion Seeds
- Topsoil
- For growing the Thavnairian Onions, I tend to use Grade 3 Shroud Topsoil. However, the yield is always going to be one onion, so I’m not sure it really matters. I tend to have a surplus since that is one of the things I regularly buy when I reach my tomestone limit.
- A good reference is the FFXIV Gardening Topsoil Gathering page.
- Care for plant ever 24-hours.
- This can be you or a friend with access to the planter / plot.
- Fish Meal as fertilizer helps. Here is a reference FFXIV Gardening Fertilizer Analysis.
- DO NOT FORGET TO WATER EVERY 24-HOURS. Your plant will die if you don’t.
- Patience. It takes roughly 10 days to grow an onion seed.
Once you get an onion, then feed it to your chocobo once it has maxed its current rank (but not before then).
Producing Thavnairian Onion Seeds

You are strongly encouraged to read FFXIV Gardening’s Guide to Gardening, especially the “Crossbreeding” section. One of the key takeaways from this section is that crossbreeding occurs at the time of planting, so the plant in the adjacent plot matters. Read the section for more details.
Garden Plots
Growing seeds requires crossbreeding. Which means you have to have a garden plot. This means you either need to own a house or be a tenant.
A house may have up to three tenants in addition to the owner. The owner can set the permissions for each of the tenants.
If you are in an FC with a house, the FC can give individuals permission to manage the plots.
The recommended plot is the Deluxe Garden Patch. A small house / cottage can have 1, a medium / house can have 2, and a large / mansion can have 3.
Plant Layout
A Deluxe Garden Patch has eight planting locations. For crossbreeding, the layout will be as follows:
| Seed 1 | Seed 2 | Seed 1 |
| Seed 2 | scarecrow | Seed 2 |
| Seed 1 | Seed 2 | Seed 1 |
Planting
The recommended soil is Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil, which promotes crossbreeding. Given the level of work involved here, you should use the highest level of Thanalan Topsoil that you can afford.
As I understand it, several paths exist to get to Thavnairian Onion Seeds. This is the one I have tried so far.
HINT: If you have one or more Botanist retainers at the appropriate levels, send them out to collect the Mirror Apple Seeds and Old World Fig Seeds. If you have a miner, they can collect Grade 3 Thanalan Topsoil.
Crossbreed 1
- Seed 1: Mirror Apple Seeds – Logging (Botanist Level 42), Market Board
- Seed 2: Krakka Root Seeds – vendors
- Yields: Curiel Root Seeds – Crossbreeding, Market Board
Crossbreed 2
- Seed 1: Mirror Apple Seeds – Logging (Botanist Level 42), Market Board
- Seed 2: Old World Fig Seeds – Harvest (Botanist Level 50), Market Board
- Yields: Royal Kukuru Seeds – Crossbreeding, Market Board
Crossbreed 3
- Seed 1: Curiel Root Seeds – Crossbreeding, Market Board
- Seed 2: Royal Kukuru Seeds – Crossbreeding, Market Board
- Yields: Thavnairian Onion Seeds – Crossbreeding, Market Board
A mansion with three garden plots would be perfect since you can get an assembly line going. One plot for Curiel Root Seeds, one forRoyal Kukuru Seeds, and one for Thavnairian Onion Seeds.
Once you have your seeds, you can sell them on the Market Board or grow them into onions.
As noted in “Do You Have Your Battle Buddy Bird (Chocobo)?” some FCs will provide onions as perks to their members. This valuable perk tends to be managed so the member can’t simply sell the onions for gil gain.
A Couple of Cautions
You are not guaranteed to get the desired type of seeds from every crossbreeding.
Remember to water every 24 hours and fertilize with Fish Meal as you can.
Good luck and have fun!
