Gar’s Maps Pre-Work

Introduction

Okay, this is the boring and mundane stuff that is good to know before you start running maps like how to unlock the needed actions, and where and how to get maps.

Unlocking Maps

Pick up the level 36 quest “Treasures and Tribulations from H’loonh in Eastern La Noscea (X: 21.1, Y: 21.1).

This will give you two actions: Decipher and Dig. More about those in a minute.

Obtaining Maps

There are several ways to obtain maps:

Gathering

If you have a gatherer of the appropriate level, you can gather one map every 18 Earth hours if you know where to look for them and how.

See the section below for more information on gathering maps.

Market Board

You can buy them off of the Market Board. As with most things, prices will vary.

Universalis.app can be of help here. It is a service that will scan the available items on the Market Boards several times a day and give you a general price comparison. Please note that price changes are much more dynamic than the Universalis update rate. As a result, you may get there and find the low-price items already sold. Or you may find worlds with lower price items. It is suggested you check your current world first.

Special Events

Many times, special and seasonal events such as the Moogle Treasure Troves will have special maps you can purchase as part of the events.

Drops

Sometimes maps may be dropped in dungeons.

  • Type:
    • Solo – Single-person maps.
      • If you are at the level specified, you should be able to beat the “protectors” and access the chest.
    • Party – Up to a team of eight.
      • Depending on the skill level and combination of players, you may be able to succeed with fewer than eight members.
      • I have run level 90 maps with dungeons in a team with a tank, a healer, and two DPS level 90 players.
  • Dungeon:
    • No – A dungeon is not possible.
      • With the exception of Timeworn Pelsteskin Maps, these are solo maps.
    • Possible
      • It is up to the “Random Number Gods” on whether or not you will have a dungeon portal.
    • Yes
      • These are guaranteed dungeon maps, which may not have a treasure chest and will only be a portal.
      • If the map location is in a water location, it may be floating somewhere in the water and can be hard to find.
  • Sellable:
    • Yes – May be found on the Market Board.
    • No – Cannot be sold on the Market Board.

Carrying Maps

There are restrictions on how many maps you can carry:

  • Timeworn maps
    • One deciphered map, regardless of type,
    • One of each class of map on you
    • One of each class in your Chocobo saddle bag.
    • Your retainers can also store one of each class of map.
      • However, to access these, you’ll need to go to a bell.
  • Special maps
    • These can be stacked.

Gathering Maps – Details

I’ll focus on this because it is essentially free with the exception of requiring a leveled gatherer and the time to find the maps.

You can gather one map every 18 Earth hours.

All three types of Disciples of the Land (Gatherers) can collect maps. For Botanists and Miners, they will be hidden items.

  • Fishers need to have “Snagging” enabled to gather maps.
  • For Botanists and Miners, the Timeworn maps are hidden items located in some nodes.
    • Use your “Luck of the Pioneer” (Botanist) or “Luck of the Moutaineer” (Miner) to help find maps.

Gamerescape provides gathering locations for each of the following map types:
